The all new Honda Insight will break ground as an affordable new hybrid within reach of consumers who want + fuel economy and great value.  The new insight will offer five-passenger seating and plenty of cargo space inside a relatively compact body.  The Insights folding rear seats further accentuate the cargo hold. In terms of propulsion, the Insight gets a smaller, lighter?and less-expensive?version of Honda's Integrated Motor Assist hybrid system that is in the Civic.  The Insight will be built at Honda's Suzuka, Japan, plant and will feature an all new platform.

It looks like Toyota will have big time competition in 2009. Honda has built a Prius-fighter. They've resurrected the name Insight, and they plan to price it below the Prius's $22,000-plus sticker. The press is unanimous in saying the move is brilliant.  Those who've driven the car say it's more fun to drive than the Prius.    Its interior is convenient and comfortable and handling is more natural than in Toyota's car. The "Eco Guide," which changes the color of the speedometer display to tell the driver how efficiently the car is being driven, wins a lot of praise. The estimated on-sale date for the insight is April 22.

What is the press saying bout the All-New Honda Insight?

  • "Honda has worked hard to make the Insight the drivers' choice. There's a hollow stiffness to the chassis, but the overall sensation is road feel, not harshness. Steering is light and precise, and the Insight changes direction happily, without keeling over as the Prius is wont to do. Throttle and brake response are smoother too." - Motor Trend
  • "Current Honda owners who get behind the wheel of the new Insight will feel instantly at home. The cabin design and ambience are an appealing mixture of Civic, Fit, and first-generation Insight, with effective ergonomics, intuitive controls (the radio interface is especially nice), and lots of nooks and crannies for storage. One of the things you give up at this price point over the Civic Hybrid is the ability to pay extra for leather upholstery, and you'll be reminded of this every time you run your fingertips over the cheap seat fabric...As for the seats themselves, the fronts are simple and comfortable, while the outboard rear seats offer good headroom, decent legroom, and good footroom."  -- Automobile Magazine
  • "A fun-to-drive driving experience is part of Honda's heritage. This, after all, is the company that brought us the CRX hatchback that showed that good fuel economy could be quick and fun. The S2000 proved that high specific power output and performance weren't necessarily environmentally destructive. The second-generation Insight isn't fun like those sport-oriented machines, but it is enjoyable. It has the responsive handling that is part of Honda's makeup, and that counts more than sheer speed. Also, Econ mode is an interesting experience." -- CNET
  • "Glancing down to the main efficiency indicator graph helped to optimize my driving style. With all the feedback I was able to achieve 62.2 mpg over the 16-mile loop. A second attempt later in the afternoon, yielded an even better 63.4 mpg." - Autoblog Green
  • "The new Insight is affordable enough to be on the shopping list of any recent college grad. It has enough space for small families and empty-nesters alike. But this is a compact. The lack of a roomy backseat, a hallmark of the Prius, makes it less desirable for those who plan to transport adults in back on a regular basis." -- Edmunds
